Back to basics
Maybe it is time again to find out why promote Firefox. No, let me rephrase that, why should the average user use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer? We are marketing Firefox to the average user, since developers and such usually have Firefox already. So therefore, a point like Firefox supports application/xhtml+xml documents will mean nothing to the average user.
Let's compare Firefox 3 to Internet Explorer 7. (A more appropriate comparison would be Firefox 3/IE 8 but IE8 is still a beta, so...)
Firefox has better CSS support than IE7, but most sites still display correctly in IE7, so what's the big deal here?
Firefox has tons of addons and is very customizable. (Yes)
Firefox supports Windows 2000. Well this would only apply if the user was actually using Windows 2000.
Firefox has session restore. (Need to make it appeal to users)
Firefox has superior speed and performance (need to prove that)
Firefox crashes less (not always)
Firefox has better security (Yes)
Firefox is open-source (why is this better?)
Internet Explorer prints pages better.
Internet Explorer can be configured by Group Policy Editor.
I'm not going to give a full-scale comparison of these 2 browsers, but perhaps we should think about reasons of promoting Firefox and how to make Firefox appeal to normal web surfers.
About the speed issue, is
About the speed issue, is Firefox noticably faster for the average consumer when compared to Internet Explorer? When measured in actual seconds, it may be faster, but to the average person, is it noticeable? Starting faster? I did a test on a cold start of Windows and IE7 does start faster than Firefox. In fact it was about 2 seconds faster than Firefox. Extensions could have contributed to the slow startup time though. And yes, themes can be appealing :)
Good eye, yes that's another
Good eye, yes that's another thing to add-> What are the "Noticable" eye catching features on Firefox that are different/ly better?
edit: ones I like: easy, simple, and very unobtrusive toolbars, buttons, and frame; Firefox itself is simply the smiley face browser.
It starts faster than IE7,
It starts faster than IE7, while IE7 pops up a little bit quicker, it takes another 2-5 seconds before it will actually let you type anything in the address bar.
Firefox is also noticeably faster to load pages than IE, it's even faster than Safari now, which is quite a step considering that Safari was noticeably faster than Firefox 2
average users?
Well people like to have colors and graphics and fasterierousess. So: Is Firefox better graphics wise, is there any apps or visual types better that run cleaner on Fx than IE? If not then scratch that idea. Graphics: 3D can Fx play online games better with more functions- any third ext. through sites like Kongregate.com; that run better in Fx than others? Will it? Speed, firefox from starting from pre-load to full window. download HTML, and are certain parts of a website that can be used quicker? Not memory prob use as much as system speeds from stability at all browsers? (In real time use, does Firefox Goto Glest.org go through forums back through news to downloads then start the download and consistently maneuver their visits with same stability and performe constructively and then shutdown correctky. What are these kind of times, real-world[average user] usage? Real-World Home Browsing Usage- RWHBU Benchmark I.
